Exam Review Game #2

Dear All,

It is time for you all to get some tips and hints about your final exam. Here are some suggestions.
  • First of all, read the question properly. Try to understand what is asked in the question. Many times students commit mistake in understanding question, and hence give wrong answer.
  • You will have good amount of time to write your answer. 180 minutes for 70 marks, that makes 2.57 minutes (approximate) for 1 mark. As per this, for a 15 marks compulsory question you will have 38 minutes, and for a 10 mark question, you get 25 minutes. So, there is no chance that you should feel that paper was lengthy.
  • Use bullets and combination of black/blue pen and pencil to make your answer more attractive.
  • Highlight important points in your answer.
  • Draw diagrams and figures to explain your points.
  • While preparing answers, keep the question in mind as well. So that you don't mix two answers.
  • Use small and correct sentences. This is important for those students whose English is not very good.
  • Pray! May God help you in achieving your dreams!

Conflict and Culture

Dear Students,
I do not have audio of last three chapters, Power and Politics, Conflict and negotiation and Organizational culture. So I am just uploading power point presentations.

Conflict & Negotialtion
Organizational Culture

Politics for power or power for politics?

If you wish to be success in the world, promise everything, deliver nothing.
 -Napoleon Bonaparte

Politics is an integral part of any organization as well as our day to day life. Nothing is wrong if the politics is played within the rules. But when politics is played only to get power, it corrupts. Just as shown in the picture below (this image may disturb you).

Teamwork- together we are an ocean

We often prefer to work in teams. And why not? As we humans are social animals, we enjoy living and working in teams. Teams give us a feeling of society, friendship and belonging.

Working in teams is more effective than working alone, unless of course you have a highly introvert persona.

Leaders - by words, by actions and by blood!

Leader is a concept that largely depend on perception of individual. But, yet many are accepted as leaders by most. These leaders have some distinctness in them which make them special. May that be their appearance, life style, words, works or name! Something in them makes them special!

Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the USA
Say for example, Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the USA is a man with fighting spirit. His story is known and often retold to tell people about his persistence of efforts in spite of heavy losses. Nervous Breakdown to losing elections at various level, he had plenty of failures. Yet he succeeded in becoming the US President.

Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. on the other side never had a big title officially, yet he rules the heart and mind of people across the world. The African-Americans did not have voting rights till late 1960's when Martin Luther fought for the equality and won the battle, at the cost of his own life.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Bharat Ratna, Missle Man of India and 11th President is a man of actions! He comes from a village which had no one flew in a plane before him. He worked with DRDO and ISRO for several years. Yet he became the President of the largest democracy in the world!

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
There are many notable leaders, who became leaders by virtue of their actions (Kalpana Chawla for example) or by their words (Swami Vivekanad for example) or by their blood (Indira Gandhi for example). You too can be one of them. Why not to give it a shot?? I strongly recommend you to read a book by Robin Sharma, "The Leader Who Had No Title".

Nelson Mandela
Sir Winston Churchill, an equal
match to Hitler in WWII
Kalpana Chawla

Indira Gandhi, 3rd Prime Minister of India
Swami Vivekanand, a great sage

Question Set 1

Are you Motivated?

Motivation is the driving force inside us. It is the force that transforms desires to action plans. It is the very thing that we call life.
There are three things which have created the whole world, as we see today.
1. Ability/Capability
2. Motivation
3. Result/Feedback.
All your great talents are useless if you don't want to do anything with that talent. That "want" is created by Motivation.

In the great battle of Kurukshetra, Lord Krishna talks to Arjun before the start of the war. The teachings of Lord Krishna are known as Geeta, one of the greatest religious scriptures. What does Lord Krishna do in those 18 chapters (adhyays) of Geeta? The crux is simple, He was motivating Arjun to fight the war. Without this motivation, Arjun's talent is of no use in the battle between the good and the bad.
In this picture Muhammad Ali, the Greatest boxer of all time, is knocking out his fierce rival Liston in 1963 rematch. He talks about a desire, a dream and a vision. To fulfill the desire, to realize the dream, to achieve the vision, one must work, hard and smart, sweat and blood. These are factors that motivate us.

Personality gets the heart! (updated)

"Sum total of ways in which one interacts with others"
What kind of personality do you have? What kind of a person are you?

What comes to your mind when you hear Mohandas K. Gandhi or Mother Teresa?

M. K. Gandhi
Mother Teresa
Sachin Tendulkar

When you are asked about cricket, he might come to your mind first.

Perhaps, in your childhood you would have dream of becoming Miss World.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

These all people have their unique style of responding to people and circumstances. The way they respond, becomes their personality. I hope we will have fun learning about various types of personalities.

Welcome 2014-16 batch!

Dear Students,

Welcome to Parul Institute of Management - PGDM Programme. I am Assistant Professor Samir Thakkar and I will be taking one of the subjects, Organizational Behavior (OB). This subject is very important for those students who would like to build their future in the field of Human Resource (HR). At the same time, the subject is very important for those who will not be taking HR.

The core objectives of this subject are:
                         1. To learn how the behavior of human beings is formed; and
                         2. To learn how to manipulate the behavior for the benefit of the organization.

This year, I have tried to include a few things which I had not included earlier. The syllabus can be downloaded from the link given below. I have worked hard to prepare this 'new' syllabus. One or two topics have their reference in Harvard Business School as well!

Apart from that, I have introduced this blog, which I will use for regular communication with you all. It is suggested that you save the link to this blog and visit it regularly. I will upload many documents on this blog for your download, and these documents will be used during the classroom sessions.

So, download the Syllabus. Good luck for your bright future.

Easy to be busy!

I always complain that I don't have time. I am sure we all have similar complain. But is it really the case? Are you guys also not having time? Come on, don't lie to me. First get as busy as I am and then say you don't have time..

I bet you cannot! It is not easy to be busy!
You know what I do every day, What hardship I face each day to earn my bread and butter? Even if you don’t want to know, keep reading.

I spend three long hours in sucking blood! Yes, you read it right. I suck blood from students by anguishing them till the last drop is drained from their mind and body. If this is not enough of blood-bath, I eat brain of my colleagues. I have developed some latest weapons, like this blog, to gain mastery.

No one, and I mean no one, can be so busy in eating brains and sucking blood as I am. What do you do: Study? Work? Have fun with friends? Watch movies? Go for a picnic? And things like that? What pity! You can’t be even 10% busy in these activities.
I tell you, I know an art. That art makes it very easy to be busy!
